Gitega is a specialty coffee produced by smallholder farmers in Nyamasheke District, Western Rwanda, and processed at the Gitega Washing Station operated by Rwanda Trading Company (RTC). The station is located in Rwanda’s western highlands, an area shaped by cool temperatures, regular rainfall, and fertile soils influenced by proximity to Lake Kivu. These conditions support slow cherry maturation and contribute to the clean, balanced profiles Rwanda is known for. Coffee production in Gitega is highly smallholder-driven, with farmers cultivating small plots on steep hillsides. RTC works closely with this network through farmer training, quality incentives, and structured cherry intake systems that encourage selective picking and timely delivery. This collaborative model allows for strong consistency and traceability at the washing-station level while supporting farmer livelihoods.
