Duromina is a well-known coffee produced by the Duromina Cooperative, located in the Agaro area of Jimma, western Ethiopia. Established in 2010, the cooperative is made up of several hundred smallholder farmers who came together with a shared goal of improving coffee quality and securing better market access. The name Duromina means “to improve lives” in Afaan Oromo, a principle that continues to guide the cooperative’s approach to coffee production and community development. The member farms are situated at elevations ranging from approximately 1,900 to 2,200 meters above sea level. Coffee is grown on small family-owned plots under native shade trees, in fertile soils typical of the Jimma region. The combination of high altitude, cool climate, and traditional farming practices allows cherries to mature slowly, contributing to good density and complexity in the green coffee. Most farms operate with minimal or no chemical inputs, making the coffee effectively organic by default. During harvest, farmers selectively hand-pick ripe cherries and deliver them to the cooperative’s central washing stations. Duromina is best known for its washed coffees, which follow a carefully controlled process. Cherries are depulped shortly after delivery, fermented, and thoroughly washed before being dried on raised beds. Drying is closely monitored, with frequent turning and sorting to ensure consistency and prevent defects. This attention to processing and drying has played a key role in establishing Duromina’s reputation for clean and reliable quality.
